چکیده

Background: An outbreak of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia was observed in the cultures of bronchial aspirations. After systematic culturing of the scopes and reprocessing the equipment, it turned out to be a pseudo-outbreak caused by a failure of the disinfector to sterilize ultrasound scopes, subsequently resulting in cross infection of the bronchoscopes via the connecting tubes in the dryer. Objectives: To support the above-mentioned findings and to show how different variables influence the decontamination process. Methods: The ultrasound scopes were deliberately contaminated with test soil and subsequently disinfected with peracetic acid (PAA), glutaraldehyde (GA) and hot water. Cultures were taken immediately after disinfection and after 4 days in the drying cabinet. Results: After disinfection with PAA, persistent contamination was observed in the endobronchial ultrasound scope, and after disinfection with PAA and prolonged storage in the drying cabinet, contamination of the endoscopic ultrasound scope persisted. All ultrasound scopes were effectively disinfected with GA. Conclusion: It is conReceived: December 15, 2014 Accepted after revision: March 16, 2015 Published online: April 30, 2015 Jos A. Prevalence of antibiotic resistance and integrons, sul and Smqnr genes in clinical isolates of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia from a tertiary care hospital in Southwest Iran

Objective(s): Stenotrophomonas maltophilia has emerged as an important opportunistic nosocomial pathogen due to its intrinsic and acquired resistance to a wide range of antimicrobial agents. The present study aimed to investigate the occurrence of antibiotic resistance and resistance mechanisms among clinical isolates of S. maltophilia from Iranian patients.<...

Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia Clinical Isolates from Blood Samples in Iran

Introduction: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a nosocomial multi drug resistant opportunistic pathogen which causes infections in vulnerable patients with cancer, cystic fibrosis and indwelling catheters. Methods: 45 clinical S. maltophilia isolates were collected from blood samples and identified by biochemical tests. Susceptibility to different antibiotics including co-trimoxazole, levofloxac...

Antimicrobial Resistance Pattern of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia Isolates from a Tertiary Care Setting in Rawalpindi, Pakistan

Introduction: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is intrinsically resistant to many antimicrobials. Like Pseudomonas spp., this bacterium has a remarkable ability to cause infections, particularly in the respiratory and urinary tracts. This study aims to determine the antimicrobial resistance pattern of S. maltophilia isolates collected from a tertiary care setting and frequency of multi, extensively...

Outbreak of pulmonary Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia infections related to contaminated bronchoscope suction valves, Lyon, France, 2014.

In April 2014, pulmonary Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia co-infections potentially related to bronchoscopic procedures were identified in the intensive care units of a university hospital in Lyon, France. A retrospective cohort of 157 patients exposed to bronchoscopes from 1 December 2013 to 17 June 2014 was analysed. Environmental samples of suspected endoscopes were cu...
